Turn Your Dreams into Reality: Part 2

Resolutions aren’t just for you anymore, your home may need some new life, too.

In part one of this series, we discussed some smaller-scale projects to consider for your home this year. They ranged from updating your fixtures to replacing your front door. Now let’s discuss some big ideas.

Those dreams seem impossible…but are they?

Take a look at the floor plan of your home. Narrow hallways break up your home into smaller, separate areas that can make a home feel constricted. We can remove or reposition non-load-bearing walls to give you the flow you crave. We can even put in half walls, columns or low built-in cabinets to define rooms while maintaining a more spacious feeling.

How about your kitchen and dining areas?

Have you noticed that your breakfast nook feels cramped while your dining room stays empty for months at a time? If so, consider combining these two rooms into one comfortable and functional dining area that can be used both for everyday dining and for guests on special occasions.

Still on the kitchen, what about the layout:

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have more windows, a better floor plan, or more counter space?

Have you been wanting to update your bathroom(s)—or even add one?

What about an entry area spacious enough to organize coats and scarves and leave wet boots to dry? Mudrooms are a great way to keep the outdoors—and all the gear needed to survive outside—out of your main living space.

Let’s not forget the basement. Does it need to be finished? Updated?

Since a basement is a space you more than likely already have, finishing it to meet your family’s needs is more economical than building an addition. In fact, a finished basement is almost always the lowest cost living space you can add to your home. If you have a two-story home with an unfinished basement, finishing that basement can add up to 50% more useable living and storage space to your home. Plus, it might be the perfect spot for that extra guest bedroom you’ve been dreaming of.

Now that you’ve fully analyzed the interior of your home, let’s step outside and tackle the exterior.

On a smaller scale: painting your siding and trim freshens the look immediately. A little bigger of a project but important if you’re looking for a solution that will reduce the time and expense of periodic maintenance, consider replacing the exterior wood with stone veneer, bricks or rot-proof, paint-free man-made materials such as fiber-cement siding. Fiber-cement siding is guaranteed for 50 years, insects can’t bore into it, and it actually serves as an extra layer of insulation for your home – which can lower your heating and cooling costs. So many benefits!

If you’re already tackling some exterior work like a new door or siding, it creates a wonderful opportunity to replace windows and choose the latest energy-saving products.

High-performance windows provide warmer interior surfaces during the winter and cooler interior surfaces during the summer, so your home always feels just right. Window updates are another example of how you can improve the energy efficiency of your home while you make it feel “new” again.

Finally, your roof. Having a new roof certainly improves curb appeal and pays off in less worry during storms. Replacing a roof is also the perfect time for changing the roof line to add dormers, extend the roof over a patio, or create a new covered entryway.
