It's National Home Improvement Month:
Let's Get Started!

If you've spent a lot of time indoors over the winter, staring at all the things in your home that could use some updating, we have some good news for you. May is National Home Improvement Month and we're celebrating by offering some tips and advice to help you get started sprucing up your home.

Since the rooms most often remodeled are the kitchen and bathroom, we have some of the latest trends and fun products for kitchen and bathroom remodeling from this year's Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) to share. The sponsor of KBIS 2016, the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), brought together more than 500 companies from the industry's leading brands to show off some fresh ideas and exciting technologies.

Don't know where to begin? Take a look at those to-do lists, Pinterest boards, and Houzz idea books you probably have and narrow things down by asking yourself this simple question: What project would make the biggest difference in how well your home works for your family?

One thing we find most families need is more storage space, so we'll concentrate this month on some storage suggestions to make your life easier than ever!

Kitchen Storage

There's no excuse for inaccessible cabinet spaces anymore with a variety of pullout storage solutions. Rev-A-Shelf's Above Appliance Pullout is a door-mounted shelf that turns hard-to-reach cabinets, like above the refrigerator, into functional space for storing everyday items or small appliances.

Their Three-Tier Blind Corner Optimizer means no more wasted space or forgetting something that is forever lost in the dark recesses of a corner cabinet. The chrome shelving unit pulls out to make pantry items or specialty cookware accessible once more.

Do food leftover containers create cabinet chaos? Rev-A-Shelf's Food Storage Container Organizer brings back some sanity with adjustable dividers and pegboards that allow limitless customization to fit your container storage needs all in a pullout shelf.

Since feeding your dog or cat is a daily chore, why not install a built-in feeding area to make it easier? Merillat offers cabinet customization that can include a built-in food and water station and a slide-out drawer that stores food more conveniently than dragging around that huge bag of kibble. Adding a dedicated cabinet for your pet's toys and grooming tools is another great option that makes your home more pet-friendly and cuts down on clutter.

Bathroom Storage

Updating a bathroom wouldn't be complete without building in some additional custom storage in the cabinets and the shower. Kohler has vanity options that include fitted drawers, pullout shelves for tall bottles and even hidden plugs for hair dryers and charging stations for shavers. Built-in shelving units in the shower will keep shampoos and body washes handy while eliminating the need for extra organizers and stick-on shelves.

So if you're ready, we're ready! Let's make this National Home Improvement Month one that makes a big difference in how much you love your home.

Maintenance Tip: Inspect Your Deck for Wood Rot and Cracks

Wood is highly susceptible to the elements. Water, ice, and sun all affect the wood, leaving it warped and cracked. These cracks create pockets that hold moisture, which leads to rot. Clean, re-stain and re-seal your deck every 1-2 years to prevent cracks and other damage. Also check for loose boards and protruding nails.

What's the Story?

Although May is National Home Improvement Month, we like to say every month is Home improvement Month around here. We are busy with a number of summer projects as well as master bathrooms, exterior repairs and just finishing a kitchen remodeling in a condo downtown. There is always a new project to improve your home.

What a steelhead!   The fishin' hole
What a steelhead!    The fishin' hole

As Garrison Keillor says, "It's been a quiet week in Lake Wobegon" but I have to say it has been anything but that around here the past month. After moving my folks into a new Independent Living facility, we took my dad to the doctor. He had been fading and it was most noticeable in that he was not his usual, talkative self. The diagnosis confirmed that he was not well at all and had liver cancer. We brought him home for a few days but it was obvious we could not care for him at home and we sadly admitted him to a hospice house where he died a week later. He was able to live at home until a week before he died; that is wonderful.

He left a wonderful legacy of family and friends and set a great example for all of us to follow. He will be missed. I shared a number of stories in the eulogy: our 1964 trip to Sawbill Canoe Outfitters for our first canoe trip, road trips in the 1967 Ford Country Squire station wagon (with the wood panels) and his love of the North Shore and Lake Superior. But the gift my family cherishes the most is his ability to talk with anyone and make them feel at ease and welcome. A wonderful skill that we use every day. Thanks Dad.

My Mom and Dad a few years back.

And so we move on. One foot in front of the other. We have 4 weddings and 3 future new babies arriving across the course of the summer in our extended family. And we also got a new dog...

I will save some of these stories for next month. Hug your kids, your folks and your loved ones.
