Top Trends from the 2015 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show

Every year the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) sponsored by the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) provides an amazing showcase for the latest and most inspiring products, trends and technologies on the horizon for kitchens and bathrooms. This year, for the second year in a row, KBIS combined with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) International Builders' Show (IBS) in Las Vegas, under the banner of Design & Construction Week. Together they hosted over 125,000 residential design and construction professionals.

Here are some of this year's top trends and innovations:

It's All About You

This year it's all about personalization and making your space meet your needs! According to research by Kitchen & Bath Design news, younger generations of homeowners want homes that more closely reflect their individual style. This can be anything from brightly colored appliances and furniture to shower systems that elevate showering to a personalized spa experience. Custom-designed kitchen cabinets, drawers and other storage areas will perfectly fit the items that will be kept there. Some of the designs showcased at KBIS included storage solutions crafted to fit wine bottles, coffee makers (and K-cups), stand mixers, spice jars, baking sheets, produce bins, knives, cooking utensils, rolls of plastic wrap or foil and even dog food!

Gray Is In

Gray is a versatile neutral that is making an appearance in all styles of kitchen and bath designs and all types of materials. It works well with traditional designs as well as modern spaces and is a beautiful, soft color for cabinets and tiles. Those brightly colored appliances are also popular to add a pop of color to the gray spaces.

Integrated Technology

This year, the KBIS Best of Show award went to LG Hausys for the TechTop Wireless Charging Surface. Just place your device on a counter embedded with this material and it will charge it! Scanomat's TopBrewer is a coffee machine built into any counter or tabletop. You can use your smartphone or tablet to control it and make your favorite coffee drink, tea, or even cold beverages. Coming this fall from GE is a refrigerator with hot water and a Keurig® K-Cup® Beverage System built right into the door along with the ice and cold water dispensers.

A growing number of other household devices, such as thermostats, televisions, lights, ovens, and even the locks on your doors can also be controlled right from your smartphone. Touchless faucets and no-touch toilets that flush with a wave of your hand will bring your bathroom into the twenty-first century. Kohler has introduced DTV+, its most advanced showering system that seamlessly integrates water, sound, steam and lighting elements. It features pre-programmed spa experiences as well as a touch screen interface, allowing the user to control and customize every facet of their showering experience.

The Great Outdoors

For those who prefer their outdoor living to be convenient rather than rugged, there are more amenities than ever before for cooking and entertaining on your deck or patio. Weather-proof cabinets by Trex® are resistant to fading from sun exposure and are perfect for storing towels, pool toys, pillows and cushions. An insulated cooler drawer can keep ice all weekend. The ultimate luxury is available from Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet™ with products such as a gas-fired pizza oven or a dishwasher built to withstand the elements and save steps at clean-up time when the grilling is done.

Of course, the most important trend of all is designing your kitchen and bathrooms to fit your lifestyle. If you're thinking about increasing the beauty and functionality of these or any room in your home, let us help you select the fresh looks and technology that are just right for you!

Maintenance Tip: Have Your A/C Inspected Before the Summer Heat

Your air conditioner should be inspected once a year. By getting it inspected early, you can catch minor problems that could potentially become major ones in the hot summer. Not only that, but proper maintenance adds years to your unit's life and helps it run more efficiently.

What's the Story

Kitchens are one of the most intensely used spaces in your home (next to the bathroom!) and it is probably the single most popular project we are asked to design and remodel in our business. They come in all shapes and sizes and it constantly amazes me how many of our older kitchens are so poorly designed and lacking in workable space. I have a client who recently told me that when they were looking for a house, they wanted a kitchen that had "not been remodeled" so they did not have to pay more for something they weren't interested in and, more importantly, a project that they could "personalize" for themselves. In Remodeling Magazine's yearly Cost vs. Value study, a kitchen remodeling provides one of the highest paybacks among remodeling projects. With all new cabinet features, technology and updated colors – maybe it is time you rethink your kitchen!

March Summary

My wife and I recently returned from a trip to Maui in the Hawaiian Islands. We had never been there, no less on a "warm weather" winter vacation (OK, I like to ski...), and wow, I can see why Hawaii is a great place to visit. The number of micro-climates was fascinating. As they say, if you don't like the weather, drive 10 minutes!

Hana Highway  Clouds at Mt. Haleakala

We stayed on the western side of the island, which is warm and sunny but took a few days to explore the rain forests on the Hana side (eastern side) of the island. Not to mention the thrilling ride over on the Hana Highway, which features over 600 turns and 29 single lane bridges in its 50 miles. You need your A-game when you are driving that road. The plants were amazing, the waterfalls and ocean were magnificent and we were treated to whales and sea turtles on a daily basis. The island is guarded by a 10,023´ volcano, Mt. Haleakala, that is constantly in the clouds. The only time you can see the top is when you drive through the clouds to the top. Pretty nice! I even saw the wily Ring-necked Pheasant...which is story for another time.

Get out the bikes, put away the snow shovels and enjoy the spring weather!

Our carpenter, Craig Windle, has been building all kinds of things in his shop over the winter. He has both full-size and kid-size Adirondack chairs and a line of custom copper roofed birdhouses. Let us know if you are interested in ordering any of his products.
