People decide to remodel their bathrooms for many reasons. From wanting to stay in their homes long-term and needing to consider accessibility to wanting a “spa” feeling. These upgrades are exciting and can be very glamorous.
Designing for our clients’ futures is something we specialize in and love doing. We recently won a CotY (Contractor of the Year) award from NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) for a residential bathroom (in the $75,001-$100,000 price range). The bathroom we won for highlighted Universal Design, which means designed specifically for accessibility. For example, some features you would see in a Universal Design bathroom includes no threshold showers, grab bars, larger doors, wheelchair access, adjusted vanity heights, and hand sprays.
When we help clients that are looking to stay in their homes with an eye towards accessibility, there are some things we ask them to think about.
- Remove the tub if there is another one in the house
- Curbless showers
- Grab bars
- Built-in seat in the shower
- Toilet height
These remodels are rewarding in their own right–homeowners have security knowing their bathroom will be able to serve them for years to come.
A Bathroom of Luxory
On the other hand, we also have clients that want to remodel their bathrooms with a focus on luxury. They want their bathroom to be an escape, to have an upgraded hotel feeling that gives them the feeling of “getting away.” These remodels are definitely on the glamorous side.
Some upgrades you might see for this type of a remodel include a bigger or separate tub and shower, two sinks, more storage, in-floor heat, a towel warmer, whirlpool bath, steam shower, and rain shower. We also see many clients that steal space from a closet or adjacent room or even change the location of plumbing fixtures to allow for better flow or more room.
Natural stone and mosaic tiles are popular choices but it is important to think about durability and cleaning. Ceramic and porcelain are easier to clean and bigger tiles mean less grout to clean.
We also focus on some of those upgrades that you might not notice right away, like better ventilation. Then there are those things you should notice immediately, such as lighting. We incorporate both natural lighting and upgrade other lighting features.
